As a country music star who’s constantly on the go, Kelsea Ballerini has learned a thing or two when it comes to creating her own glam on the go.

With less than a week to go on her 10-night Heartfirst tour, the “Peter Pan” singer broke her glam on the go routine for PEOPLE, revealing her tips and tricks for achieving the classic Ballerini look.

“I’m a singer. I’m not a makeup artist, but I try my best,” Ballerini, 29, begins as she preps her skin with eye patches, moisturizer and deflates her face with a PureLift Face gadget. .

“I used to have someone go on tour with me the whole tour to do my makeup,” she says. “But as I toured more and more and felt like I learned from some of the best makeup artists in the world, I learned enough along the way where now it’s something I ‘just like having my self time to do.’

She continues, “It’s meditative and I can just go to the back of my tour bus and put on a podcast or some crime addict music and just hang out and give myself some time. And it kind of puts me in the right headspace to go out and play a show, so it’s been a fun little thing to learn over the years.

The “I Quit Drinking” singer then shows how she goes glam, with a makeup routine all her own. She also shares that in addition to becoming a meditative practice, she found it made her feel better just by putting it on.

“There are days when if I have nothing to do, I’ll sit at home and just feel right. And sometimes I’ll just go play in my makeup and feel better.”

“It’s not because I feel like I look better, it’s just because it does something where I’m like, ‘Oh, okay. I have to play a little'” , added Ballerini, who recently filed for divorce from Morgan Evans. .

Her relationship and perception of makeup changed over the years as she realized it wasn’t so much about changing who you were.

“When I was young, I thought makeup was something you used to change how you looked rather than something you used to express yourself or enhance the traits you love about yourself.

And now for me, there are days when it’s okay to go out without makeup and I don’t feel any less me or pretty, but there are days when I look like I’ve spent 40 hours on my face, and I probably did. And it’s fun too.”

She concludes, “I just think it’s a way, I don’t know, to be free and play and feel beautiful in a different way, because you already are.”

Ballerini’s studio album Subject to change is slated for release on Friday. On Saturday, she will embark on her 10-night Heartfirst tour where she will make stops in major cities like New York, Boston, Atlanta and Los Angeles.
